Chapter 30

“Who’s there?” I ask hurriedly.

“It’s Ree,” a familiar voice speaks from behind the door, and I let out a sigh of relief.

I glance at the clock and in half an hour I have to see Elisa. The lock opens, and I peek out of the room, having a look around. Ree bows upon seeing me and gives me a wrapping.

“What’s this?” I ask him.

“It’s a gift from the prince,” Ree reports to me. “His Highness looks forward to seeing you at the opening of the initiation festival tonight as Lady Elisa's escort.”

“Thank you,” I accept the letter. “How are you doing?”

“All good,” he says reservedly, his intent gaze never wavers. He leans slightly forward and whispers, “Does he know?”

“Um… Okay, bye! See you later!”

I’m about to disappear behind the door, but Ree holds it open.

I freeze in place, having a look around, making sure no one is eavesdropping. Nobody's here. I shrug my shoulders. I can’t tell him much.

“So, are you two together?” Ree says tensed. His bi-colour eyes gleam, nostrils flare. “It’s dangerous… did you tell him yourself?”

“I’m alone,” I say sternly.

“That’s why you smell like him?”

I’m lost for words for a moment, yet then I furrow my brow and say:

“You know, thank you for your help, but my personal life is none of your business.”

Ree let’s go of the door and mumbles:

“Yes, of course, sorry. I’m just worried for you. The castle is restless these days, and if someone finds out…”

The werewolf looks so upset that a wave of embarrassment immediately washes over me.

“I’m sorry, too,” I whisper. “It’s complicated. I don’t want to put you in danger.”

“Danger? You think I can’t handle it?”

“No. It’s not what…”

“You know what. I’ll prove it to you. I’ll prove to you that you can rely on me. You don’t have to carry the weight of the world on your shoulders alone.” Ree says loudly, and it sounds like a childish outburst. “Do you really think I can’t be a help?”

“Please, don’t…”

“Today at the ceremony there’s going to be a tournament. You’ll see it for yourself!” Ree’s face is full of confidence. He bows and bids me goodbye.

‘As if the rest wasn't enough…’ I think in the back of my mind, staring at his unnaturally straight back and tense shoulders. I have a strong urge to slap him on the back of his head, so that he doesn’t act up like a spoiled teenage boy. But, since he has already rounded the corner, I decide to go back to my room.

What’s up with Ree, anyway? What smell was he talking about? Could it be Alan’s smell because we kissed last night? No need to be a psychic to know that the prince will destroy whoever flirts with me before his eyes. And Ree… He is great and all, but he is nowhere close to evoke the same feelings in me, as Alan evokes. Besides, I don’t want to put the boy in more danger…

In addition to that, I have to make sure no one knows my true identity.
